Awesome Adjectives!

We have been learning to use adjectives (describing words) to make our writing interesting. Today we ate Gummi Worms. We had a bit of fun as Miss Y tricked the children and some of them thought they were going to eat real worms. Then we brainstormed describing words to describe the lollies. Afterwards, we wrote a shape poem with the words. What do you think of the awesome adjectives the children came up with? Click on the picture to see a bigger view.

The Arts - Kapa Haka Performance

On Monday we were very lucky to have the Waiuku College Kapa Haka group come and perform at school as part of Maori Language Week in New Zealand. It also tied in very well with our topic "Arts Alive".

The children wrote recounts about the performance. This term we are learning to start sentences in different ways to make our writing more interesting.

At 9:30 we went to the hall for the Waiuku College Kapa Haka group. They sang songs and they did actions with long sticks and the pois. Two boys did the haka. The lady played music on the guitar. They were good. Nate.

This morning after handwriting we went to the assembly and we saw the girls and boys sing songs. First they sang a hymn. Then they sang Rona and the moon. The two boys did a haka. It was scary. I saw Nathen's sister Alisha. They did actions with long sticks and a pois. The show was excellent. Michelle

Today room 6 went to assembly. Some of the Waiuku College came. There were two boys and six girls. One was Nathen's sister. They did some songs and some actions that were excellent. They had pois and long sticks. One of them I know. At the end two boys came up and they were loud. It gave me a fright. Then we went back to class. Nicole

The Arts - Paper Mache

This term we are studying 'The Arts'. We will be creating some artworks for an exhibition in the first week of Term 4. The children really enjoyed making paper mache Mars landscapes last term. This term we will be extending upon that and trying some new techniques to create our own "Wild Things". Today we watched a YouTube clip of a fantastic artist called Dan Reeder. Have a look at the work he does. He is so clever! Hopefully it will give Room 6 lots of ideas.

Poetry in Term 3

This term we will be reading, listening to and writing poetry. Today we began with acrostic poems. We wrote our first poem together as a class and our topic was Ms Joplin. There is a link to the website we used on this blog now.

An acrostic poem uses the letters in a topic word to begin each line. All lines of the poem should relate to or describe the topic word.

Maybe she likes icecream
She is good to us

Just beautiful
Only one principal
Principal of school
Lovely lady
I like you
Nice person

Then each child wrote their own acrostic poem about Winter.

Winter is windy
I'll go skiing
Not warm
There is snow
Eat snow
