Poems with a Twist
Poems with a twist have four short lines. The first three lines are about getting ready to do something. They are full of expectation. The fourth line is the twist where things don't quite work out.
Room 6 wrote poems about going to the beach.....
I packed my goggles
Got my togs
I went in the car
Oh no beach is closed!
Youngsung
Packed my togs
Got my towel
Got my toys
Live sharks!
Willem
Packed my togs
Got my boogie board
Got my togs on
No car!
Nate
I packed my togs and towels
I have my sunscreen
Got my sunhat and goggles
Oh, no water!

John Pusateri the printmaker visits.
Today we were really lucky to have an award winning printmaker visit our class. His name is John Pusateri and he is from the Auckland Print Studio. John showed us some prints he had done and the work of some other artists. Then we asked questions. He does stone lithography which means he draws an image onto limestone and then takes a print of that. Then he showed us how to do our own prints using polystyrene blocks. You can visit his website to see his work by following the links on the side.

Similes in Poetry
We are learning how to create similes for our poetry. We need to use the words like or as to compare two things.
Here are Room 6's 'Wild Things' poetry using similes.
My horn is like a knife
My claws are like pencils
My feet are like corn
I live in a car
And eat petrol
Logan
My hair is like spaghetti
My eyes are like the sun
My ears are like wings
My foot is like concrete
I live in a rotten banana
And eat rotten skin
Hayley
My horn is like a knife
My eyes are like the sun
My foot is like a smelly sock
I live in a nose
And eat boogers.
Nikko
My hair is like string
My fur is like a soft pillow
My horn is sharp like a blade
My toes are like lightbulbs
My ears are like wings
I live in a barn
And eat hay.
Angel
My hair is like string
My eyes are like the moon
My fur is like a soft pillow
I live in a forest
And eat reindeer.
Nicole
My fur is like grass
My claws are like blades
I live in an ear
And eat ear wax.
Brayden P
My hair is like twisted noodles
My eyes are like lightbulbs
My fur is like carpet
I live in the heater
And eat dust.
Nate
My fur is like a soft pillow
My scales are as smooth as concrete
My toes are like corn cobs
I live in a shark
And eat shark guts.
Matthew
My horn is like a stone
My fur is like a soft blanket
My hair is like string
I live in a light bulb
And eat glass.
Madi
My hair is like noodles
My eyes are like a sun

Alliteration Poetry
This week we are looking at alliteration for our poetry. Alliteration is when two or more words in a poem begin with the same letter or sound.
Example - Crazy Cats. This is an example of alliteration because both the words begin with "C".
We looked at a website and listened to some examples. You can look at this yourself by following the link on the side bar. Then we brainstormed a whole lot of S topic words and adjectives to describe then. Finally we wrote our own......
Stinky sharks swimming silently in the sea. Nadia
Stinky snakes sang silly songs. Six little sheep singing smelly songs. Seven snails sliming. Michelle
Six stinky seals slither silently. Nathen
Spotty spiders stich slime. Six seals sang songs. Seven sharks sang to slugs. Brayden P
Seven scary spiders sleeping. Nicole
Smelly snakes slither. Seven stinky suduko. Scary shark swimming. Tumokai
Spotty small snails sitting straight. Hayley
Spooky spiders singing spooky songs. Smelly snails stink. Logan
Smelly sick spiders singing strange songs. Madi
Smelly sticky snakes slithering side to side. Six spiders sang stick songs. Brayden M
Smelly spiders singing stupid songs. Jayden
Spooky spiders sing stupid silly songs. Nate
Stinky smelly spiders slide strangely. Nikko
Seven stupid smelly sheep sang a stupid song. Youngsung
Seventynine suduko spiders. Seven sick snakes slither. Matthew

World Poetry Day and Room 6 Famous Authors
Celebrating Achievements at Assembly
Youngsung was rewarded with a
chooclate bar by Mrs Kendall for awesome effort on Mathletics. Tumokai was very brave when he decided to 'have a go' at swimming. He really enjoyed it in the end. Michelle always tries her very hardest in all her class work. Hayley has original ideas and chooses awesome words in her storywriting. Matthew is a valuable part of our team. He is always thinking ahead and using his initiative to get the jobs done. CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL!

Poetry in Term 3
This term we will be reading, listening to and writing poetry. Today we began with acrostic poems. We wrote our first poem together as a class and our topic was Ms Joplin. There is a link to the website we used on this blog now.
An acrostic poem uses the letters in a topic word to begin each line. All lines of the poem should relate to or describe the topic word.
Maybe she likes icecream
She is good to us
Just beautiful
Only one principal
Principal of school
Lovely lady
I like you
Nice person
Then each child wrote their own acrostic poem about Winter.
Winter is windy
I'll go skiing
Not warm
There is snow
Eat snow
Rooms are warm
By Nathan
Woolly socks
I like going on the tramp
No hot drinks
Too cold
Eat ice
Run lots
By Nathen
Windy day
Ice is cold
Nice and warm inside
This day is really icey
Every winter is cold
Rainy days
Michelle
Woolly jumpers
Icey snow
Nice cold snow
The snow is so cold
Exciting snow
Really snowy
Jayden
Winter is cold
Icey mountains
No sun
The trees are white
Eat snowflakes
Rainy
Brayden P
Warm fire
I like the ice
Not very warm
There is nice cold snow
Eat the ice
Really rainy
Matthew
Winter is cold
Ice is cold
Not sunny
There is snow
Every day raining
Really windy
Madisyn
Winter is cool
I'll go skiing
Nice weather
The snow is so cold
Every winter is cold
Rainy day
Nadia
Weather is cold
Ice is cold
No sun
There is no grass
Eat the snow
Room is warm
Tumokai
Winter is cold
Inside is warm
No outside play
This is too cold
Eat the snow
Really can it be snowing

"Dan The Flying Man"
We read 'Dan The Flying Man' in class and then acted out the story at assembly, earlier this term. In the story Dan flies over a house, bridge, flowers and seas etc. All the village people ran after him. We made our own Dan the Flying Man pictures using crayon, dye and photographs of ourselves.

Art in Room 6
Last week the children wrote me a letter to tell me what they have enjoyed doing in class. Art and cooking were hot favourites. Have a look at the awesome artwork they created after we read 'Bertha and the Beeman'. First they had to draw their picture in pencil. Then they had to go over the lines with a squeezy bottle containing black paint mixed with PVA glue. This was very tricky. Finally, they dyed the picture. Awesome results guys! Miss Y.

Geronimo Stilton Visits our Class
We had a busy week last week with the school Book Fair. On Friday we had a book character parade, where some of the children chose to dress up. Congratulations to Matthew who made a wonderful spy and was chosen to by our class winner, by a panel of judges. Earlier in the day we had a special visitor to class, Geronimo Stilton the main character from a popular series of books. Geronimo is the editor and chief of The Rodent’s Gazette, the most famous daily newspaper on Mouse Island.
